National Vaccine Injury Attorneys Representing People with ITP Triggered by Vaccination
Vaccination is a medical intervention designed to invoke a protective immune response. While a vast majority of people experience no lasting ill effects from vaccination, for some rare individuals that immune response goes awry, leading to devastating effects. Among the rare vaccine injuries is a blood disorder called Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP).
At Kraus Law Group, LLC, our attorneys provide representation for those who have suffered vaccine-related injuries, helping them recover compensation through the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP). While we are located in Chicago, Illinois, we work with clients located throughout the United States. If you, or a loved one, suffer from ITP, we can help you understand the role that vaccines may have played in your condition, and we will work with you to determine your options for receiving the compensation you deserve.
What Is Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura?
ITP is a disorder of the blood. In ITP, the immune system produces antibodies which then attack and destroy platelets. That platelet destruction then makes it impossible for the blood to clot like normal. In essence, people with ITP have too few platelets in their blood.
ITP can impact anyone, but children and women are more often affected. People with chronic autoimmune conditions are also at risk of developing ITP. While ITP in children is usually self-limiting, in some children and adults, the condition can become chronic, lasting months to years.
ITP Symptoms and Treatment
In ITP, the symptoms can be subtle, and an affected person may not even need treatment. Symptoms of ITP may include:
- Easy bruising;
- Bleeding from the gums or nose;
- Tiny red/purple rash-like spots on the skin (petechiae);
- Abnormally heavy menstrual cycles; and
- Larger areas of bleeding into the skin (purpura)
ITP is often diagnosed following blood tests but may require a bone marrow biopsy. If the condition is mild, the person may need only periodic bloodwork to monitor platelet levels. However, in more severe cases, the person may require medicine that increases platelet count, and/or the use of other immune modulating medication. At times, surgical removal of the spleen is the recommended treatment as it can increase the platelet count, though splenectomy can have other effects, like an increased risk of developing infections.
What Is the Relationship Between Vaccines and ITP?
The relationship between vaccines and ITP is not entirely understood, though it does have some association with the MMR vaccine. National Vaccine Compensation Program (VICP) cases are extremely complex and require the skilled handling of medical data, including medical records, medical literature and potentially involves working with medical expert witnesses, as well as navigating strict federal procedures. That complexity requires that the attorneys handling vaccine injury claims be well versed not only in the Vaccine Program, but in the science behind ITP.
Our firm is a respected leader in representing clients impacted by various vaccines, including those that are linked to ITP, such as:
- MMR
- Tdap
- Hepatitis A
- Flu Vaccination
- Varicella
In one representative case, Attorney Ed Kraus secured a lump sum of $125,000 in compensation for a child who developed ITP after receiving the MMR vaccine.
