The pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, Prevnar, is a common vaccine for children and is typically required for entry into daycare facilities. Prevnar is also now recommended for many adults over age 50. While rare, several serious side effects and reactions have been reported for this vaccine.
Known Vaccine Side Effects
There are different types of pneumococcal vaccine:
- Prevnar 13 conjugate and Prevnar 20
- Pneumovax polysaccharide
Prevnar is recommended for children under 5 and adults over age 65, while Pneumovax is often used for certain at-risk adults and people older than 65. Unfortunately, only Prevnar is covered under the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program and so only individuals that received a Prevnar vaccination may file a claim with the VICP.
Acknowledged adverse events related to the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine include:
- SIRVA
- Pneumonia
- Lung infection
- Stomach and small intestine inflammation
You may also have suffered other, unlisted injuries from a severe reaction to the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, such as anaphylaxis or Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS).
Compensation May Be Available
Serious vaccine injuries can result in:
- Medical bills
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program may provide money for these expenses. Although the program recognizes that Prevnar vaccines can cause injuries, in most cases, you must prove that either your injury, or your child's injury, was caused-in-fact by the Prevnar vaccine. Attorneys Ed Kraus, Amy Kraus and Brynna Gang are experienced in handling these claims, and our team can build a case that shows how Prevnar either caused, or contributed, to your injury.
